Washougal -
a terrific place to live! Known as the Gateway to the Columbia Gorge, Washougal had a long history as an Indian trading post before it caught the attention of British traders and then hosted Lewis and Clark, who camped near the mouth of the Washougal River. Washougal, with its already vast history, became the first settlement of American pioneers in the state of Washington in 1844. Today, this thriving town on the edge of the Columbia River is undergoing a renaissance. Its downtown is being revitalized with new buildings and store fronts. The town's outlying hills offer some of the most breathtaking views of the Columbia River Valley and Portland city lights, including those seen from Sunset Ridge. All roads in Washougal lead to recreation. The town sits literally minutes from the Columbia River Gorge, the nation's only National Scenic Area. Hiking trails for all  skill levels, breathtaking waterfalls and superb fishing are all  available here. Plus, from Sunset Ridge, you're just 45 minutes to the wind surfing epicenter of the world - Hood River. Not to be outdone, the Washougal River that winds through town offers spawning grounds for salmon and excellent fly fishing opportunities. Noted for operating the first public school North of the Columbia River, Education has always played an important role in Washougal's history.
